Two TRC crews entered the Great Tyne Row on September 6 . This is a 25 km challenge event with an element of racing, starting at Newburn, passing through Newcastle Quayside and finishing at Tynemouth.

The two crews were mainly a mixture of Development Ladies and WRecK rowers. Julian’s Tees Maids completed the course in a very creditable 1 hour 51 minutes to finish as 3rd ladies crew and 6th overall out of 40 boats.

Smoggies on the Tyne had a more leisurely row finishing 16th overall in a time of 2 hours 1 minute. There was some excitement at the end when rowing from the finish of the event near the mouth of the Tyne to land at Tynemouth RC. The tired crews encountered five feet high waves and it became obvious why wide boats are stipulated for the event. This was no trouble to the Smoggies who, with big John at bow, sliced through the waves as a knife through butter and were asked to show the way and lead the flotilla back to Tynemouth.
